Goin' Straight!

I was born with naturally curly hair. When I was a baby I looked like I had an afro. Gradually my curls went away and by the time I was 3 years old my hair was straight. It stayed that way until around age 11 when I started to go through puberty. Then the curly hair came back full throttle and never left. I didn't know what to do with curly hair so I always tried to make it straight. Constantly brushing it and even ironing it on occasion.

Then one day when I was 15 for whatever reason, I decided to not brush my hair after I washed it. The strangest thing happened, it dried in these spiral-like curls. After that I always let my hair be curly and I began to really like it.

Well, now after over 30 years of wearing my hair curly I decided it was time for a change. I discovered this great new way to make your hair straight that is actually good for your hair. It's called the "Coppola Keratin Complex Treatment". I made an appointment at my salon and got the treatment done a couple of days ago. The treatment stays in your hair for 72 hours. During this time you can't get it wet at all, including sweating. I will return to the salon tomorrow to get it washed out and re-styled. Then I should have straight hair for 3 to 5 months!

Happy Mother's Day!

Happy Mother's Day to all you moms out there! I don't know what the weather is like where you live, but here in Michigan it is sunny and bright. A little on the cool side, but none the less a beautiful day. I'm looking forward to spending the day with my husband and 6 children.

I was greeted this morning with home cooked eggs that my 10 year old whipped up and many hand-made and store bought cards. Thanks everyone, I love you!

Here is a really funny video that all moms will enjoy. Check it out!

New Drum Cover

I've been busy with the Mydols, learning the songs and preparing for gigs so I haven't been able to work on any new drum covers. Now that we are between gigs and I feel comfortable enough to only practice each Mydols song once a day instead of 5 times each day, I have time to work on drum cover videos again. I'm learning a lot from being in the band including the confidence to attempt to learn a drum cover by ear. In the past I learned all my drum covers from reading the music for the song. Now, it's time to try doing it by ear only. So I did. With a little help from my new drum teacher and a lot of daily practicing, I finally got through my first by-ear drum cover. It's not exact or perfect, but I feel a solid attempt for my first try.  :)

That Thing You Do!

Last night Tony and I wanted to watch a movie so we decided to see what was free on cable. We came across the Tom Hanks movie from 1996, "That Thing You Do!". What a fun movie! I found myself grinning from ear to ear throughout most of the movie. It made me think how happy and thankful I am to be a part of a band. (even though the band in the movie does break up in the end) Unlike many other movies about bands this one actually had the spotlight on the drummer! How cool is that! "That Thing You Do!", check it out at your local video store for a rock-n-rollin' fun time! Here is a music video clip from the movie on YouTube.

My first gig a success!

My first gig with The Mydols was a great success! Everyone had a great time at The Magic Stick for A Circus Family Hootenanny. There were tons of kids and they all seemed to be really having a good time. The adults were enjoying themselves too with plenty of adult beverages to go around! Thanks Judy, Wensdy and April for welcoming me into your group, I'm so very grateful. Our very special guest Johnny Miller is awesome on the guitar. Thanks Johnny for all your encouragement, support and words of wisdom. I really appreciate it!

ROCK BAND-Mom

Who would have imagined it could all start with a video game! Hi, I'm Laura and a mom of six children, all of whom love to play video games. That was great for them but video games didn't much interest me. That all changed November, 2007 at my oldest son's 17th birthday party where they were playing the video game, 'Guitar Hero'. Immediately it caught my attention and I tried playing it. What a blast it was! I knew what I wanted for Christmas that year. Then I started thinking, wouldn't it be cool if someone made a game like Guitar Hero but that also included drums? Low and behold that same month the video game 'Rock Band' came out. We quickly rushed to the stores to find this new and exciting game. Once I started playing Rock Band I was instantly hooked! It didn't take long and I was working my way up to expert levels. Out of all the instruments in the game the drums were the closest to the real thing, so they were more challenging than playing the guitar. Eventually my husband grew weary of me playing the game and suggested I learn the real instruments.

In July 2008, I got a Mexican Fender Stratocaster and a 5-piece Ludwig CS Custom drum set. I wanted to try and learn both the guitar and the drums. Maybe I could at least try to be a rock star like the character I created in the video game. After a few months of learning both instruments it became clear that I had to choose one. We homeschool our children and I just couldn't feasibly continue to do two practices a day and still have time for my family. It wasn't hard to choose. The drums were awesome and I knew that was going to be my instrument of choice.

Now six months later I've been given the opportunity to join a band! The Mydols! I am so grateful to my husband for supporting me in my quest to learn the drums and join a band and to God for blessing me with this awesome opportunity!
